The role of house captain lasted one year for me. It started in the beginning of year 12 and ended in the early weeks of 2013. There are six houses in south island and there is a male and female captain for each house. As House captain I had to ✔ plan and initiate activities such as Glee and IH Music Fest! These were inter house events that students competed in. I had to co-ordinate and ♚ collaborate with other House captains to do this, and the events were very well received!
As a house captain I learnt skills of leadership ☂. I, along with the other house captains were asked to organize or oversee many events. For example for after school inter-house events we would have to be present to supervise. For other events like glee and music fest though, we had to audition students.
For glee once we interviewed students we then had to put together a number for the song that we drew at assembly. This was a lot more difficult, we had to undertake this challenge ♥ and put together a song. Neither Jakob and I take music so this was definitely something new for us.
SOUTH ISLAND SPORTS TOUR 2012
This year for Sports Tour we went to Bangkok, Thailand. The trip included four different sports this year, two for male and two for female. I played both netball and basketball on this sports trip. I was only supposed to play just netball but because our basketball team were short in numbers due to injuries and other reasons, our netball players just subbed for the basketball team. ♥ This allowed me to undertake a new challenge because I had never played basketball before! Along with this I have been able to ☂ develop many new skills for netball because we were playing against adult woman team, playing against ladies who are older are better than us have allowed our team to better our playing. Also, even though basketball and netball are different sports, but fundamentally there are also a few similarities, such as passes and dummies, we all learned many useful techniques to improve our netball skills in this tour.
Although there are similarities between netball and basketball it was a very difficult to play a sport I had never played against girls who train all the time. Although apart from the 5 core basketball players the rest were netball players and we still managed to win a few games!
During the trip apart from play our sports we woke up every morning and did exercises in the pool which was our early morning wakeup for the day. Then we would have a few hours free time, some people chose to go to the gym or some shopped.
10 hours action
I am an avid Rugby fan and player!
I have training 3 days a week and games either on Tuesday and Thursday. I play for the Valley Woman’s Team and I play for our school’s A team.
This year is my first year playing for woman’s and it has really made me aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I have also been able to develop so many new skills, my passing, running and positional awareness have improved. The older and more senior players in my team have shown me many things I couldn’t do before; and playing with players who are on a lower level has forced me to concentrate on my passing. I have to really focus on the timing and the trajectory of the passes, to give my teammates maximum time to plan their next moves.
I love team sports because you learn as a group; from dealing with problems in matches to making improvements to devising effective training, we are in it together. The camaraderie and the social aspects off the pitch is also something we all enjoy..
Having a team beside you on the pitch is a massive incentive to play your best because you’re not just playing for yourself but you are playing for the other 14 players alongside you; the pressure of trying not to let your teammates down is as stressful as it is exhilarating.
Year 12- 48 hours
Year 13- 140 hours
As this academic year comes to a close my tennis lessons are slowly dwindling down as well.
I have played 3 hours a week for the past year and learnt lots about this sport. I have played tennis for the majority of my life on and off… but as of the beginning of last year I wanted to to set a goal for myself to better my tennis dramatically, therefore I set out on playing 3 hours a week.
I learnt a lot about myself, that at times I really wanted to give up because I was frustrated when my progress came to a plateau, but I made myself carry on for the year. I have learnt an important lesson; sometimes the going can get tough, but if you persevere the hard work will bring results at the end.
✔ As a class we planned to create a short clip for the Ebeneezer’s School For The Blind. We created a Podcast to the book ‘Little Red Cap’. I was the voice of The Mother. ☀
This was important for our whole tutor group to take part because as a class we should be aware of what’s happening in our world. We should seek to help other and MAD week was a perfect opportunity for it. ♚We worked together and created something for the students of this school.
Through the interaction with these children, it has made me realized how privileged we are, with the things we take for granted. It was so nice to help other children in our community, and hopefully, for some of us, this will be the first of many charitable events.
The ESF Marketing Competition took place at Shatin college. This year South Island sent two teams to take part. We created a campaign for the company called Costa Cruises.
The day was fast and furious; there were many things we had to do, many deadlines to meet and sometimes, we had to improvise on the spot. We had to learn to work very efficiently to get all the work down. ♚
As a team, we had to organise effective communication, set a common goal , manage our tasks and we had to trust each other to do their share; and do it well. As failure on one side would cascade into another and the avalanche of extra work would render our project a failure.
In the end, we managed our objectives and it was a very exhausting but rewarding experience.
Written end of year 12:
Innovation is a two year job which i got at the end of year 11. My position is the PR assistant this year and next year I will be the PR manager. So far the experience overall has been very rewarding. It is a tough job but with only 2 week to the show things are getting very stressful. I have to be very organized and communicative with my other team members. This year I had to assist Arabella, who is the pr manager is collecting money spororship, clothes sponsorship, and F&B.
We raised $100,000 before the show started the fund the production of the show. We collected 4 male brands and 6 female brands, these were the clothes that the models wore during the show along with the student designers. For wine we found a sponsor who was kind enough to donate 20 bottles plus glasses, then food we made ourself.

We are just about to have my second show since working on the innovation team, It’s a very stressful time because we are all trying to pull of the best show possible. We are ☀ engaging with global issues because this is a charity fashion show. It is so important for all of us to communicate as a team and ♚ work together otherwise there will be aspects of the show aren’t in sync.
We have just created the gift bags for the VIP’s in the show which is what I’m most proud of this year. We had kitson perfume, cake pops, prestige sponsored magazine, Pure fitness bags, and a few other sponsors gave little free giveaways.
Written in march of 2013 after the show:
Last week was the innovation show. It was probably the best one so far that I have seen. This year I didn’t get to watch the majority because Zoe, my pr assistant, and I were working a lot back stage and in the VIP section to make sure the food and beverage were up to scratch. This year we got 10 wine bottles sponsored and food was from different places. We made sandwiches and got the rest of the food from the country club, cricket club, and aberdeen marina club.
